Portuguese Man-of-war While swimming with my son at Hollywood beach in Florida I saw something funny looking floating in the distance. It almost looked like trash bobbing in the swells, but at the same time it had wriggling locomotive movement that made it look quite alive. When it drifted a little closer I could see it was a Portuguese Man-of-War jellyfish. I kept a close eye on it after that, since I knew that below that pretty sail hung long tentacles that upon contact, would sting like 100's of bee stings. Eventually it washed up on shore where I was able to snap a few photos. It was exciting to get such a closeup view of this majestic invertebrate, tentacles and all. |
